So it’s been a couple of weeks now and Guardians of the Galaxy is the number one movie in America. Let me be honest I’m not surprised by that. I went saw the movie on Monday so my ticket sales didn’t go to the opening weekend box office but that’s okay because I actually didn’t see the first Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters. I thought I’d take some time collect my thoughts on the film and I think now it’s time for me to do my traditional written review.
So, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2 takes place I believe a couple of months after the last one so in terms of chronological order with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this comes actually before Civil War. It’s before Thor Ragnarok and everything after. That being said was it as good as the first one?
I think that’s a big question everybody been asking and to be honest with you I’ll have to agree that of the jokes in the film did feel a little forced. I was a little disappointed with Baby Groot. While Baby Groot is pretty funny I do feel like the whole baby thing was kind of overplayed and as a result, some of the jokes were kind of killed from being shown in the trailers.
Such as one scene with the nuclear warhead. I felt like it was overplayed in the trailers and then in the movie age of blah. I pretty happy with the film overall and I have to admit that the whole Yondu aspect of the film was actually pretty good. I’m going to try to keep this review to a minimum and eliminate as many spoilers as I possibly can but I do recommend you go see the film.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a tear-jerker
There are certain parts that really make you feel and it’s definitely a tear-jerker. What I was really happy about was that I didn’t really feel like they change much of the characters other than Drax. He did come across as a little weird and a little different than the last film. He seems like he was more of a comedic act this time versus being the more serious character
I’m not completely familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy it turns the comic book so I could not tell you how close they are to the comics. But from a general moviegoers perspective it seemed to work and at least I understand the characters. The whole Star-Lord and Ego The Living Planet ordeal, it was actually a very good. I love the fact that Kurt Russell plays Ego the living planet.
However, I do feel like the whole living planet thing was kind of underplayed. I wish they had done more with it. Mantis feels like she didn’t really have anything to do the entire movie, so it kind of felt like she was just kind of there. But that’s to be expected because I feel like the whole focus of this film was Star-Lord and his father. Which again that could have been played up a little bit more.
Rocket & Co.
I do like the fact that they did give Rocket something to do this time and I feel like he was a more important character to the story this time around other than just being another member of the team. I know this review might sound a little negative that you might be thinking I didn’t like the movie. Let me be straight here; I love this movie, this movie was so fun to watch yes it has flaws. It’s not perfect I don’t think Marvel has ever gone out to make a perfect movie, heck even Civil War which I would say is probably the best feeling that they’ve done in a long time wasn’t perfect.
Hell, the other good film they had done Winter Soldier which ironically was also Captain America. That they just kind of play it safe and that’s to be expected because people go out and drones to see these movies so why change the formula?
What to Expect
But I can basically say about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is it was an extremely fun movie. All aspects of the film we’re pretty great, the characters are great, the soundtrack was freaking awesome. It’s a nice throwback because my mom used to listen to seventies and eighties music all the time especially some of the earlier music of the sixties and seventies. So that kind of music I grew up with so I dig it. I hope that they do a little bit more with the villain next time.
I have to admit besides Ego the Living Planet the other set of villains were pretty bland. You could almost cut them out completely and I don’t think it would have hindered the story too much if not at all. While I understand the setup for future Marvel films that is one thing that kind of bothers me about Marvel films. I do feel that they tend to sometimes do things simply to set up future films versus just telling a good story. Such as Avengers Age of Ultron. I felt like it was more of a setup for the coming face and just doing a good team up movie.
My Final Score
Overall Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is an extremely fun ride, if you’d like the first film then you will like this film. If you’re a Fan Marvel you’ll definitely love this film. There are an of couple really important scenes in this film that really opens up the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ways I never believed they actually would do. I love Sylvester Stallone’s cameo in the film and I have to say this; I think it’s freaking awesome that he didn’t take any money to do the film.
So if you haven’t seen it yet go out and see it it’s probably good now to see it because most of the crowds already moved on to the next set of films. So you shouldn’t worry about her if that’s a problem for you. For those of you wondering if there was a Spider-Man teaser at the end of this film, there was not. I can confirm without spoiling anything for you that there were no initial after credit scenes that actually directly affect any other Marvel film. other than perhaps setting up driving the Galaxy volume 3 and potential other effects to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that I don’t feel directly affects Infinity War
So if you haven’t seen it yet go out and see it. Most of the crowds have already seen the film and moved on to the next set of films so you shouldn’t worry if crowds are an issue for you.
