Today I’d like to talk a bit about the Warcraft movie, I haven’t talked about it very much yet on the site, you can check out the tag section about it here which will show you all the topics I’ve done on it so far. Of course, while I’m a fan of the games I worried from the start that this film would crash and burn hard. Let me explain by giving you 3 reasons why I feel the Warcraft movie will fail. Then I’ll go into why it’s such a success so far overseas.
There is also a cool item being added to the game for you to pick up, I’ll talk a bit about that as well. Right now the film has been released overseas so be watchful of spoilers, I’ll be seeing the film on opening night and will report my thoughts and review here in a few days after.
Also, if you read to the end you’ll get the details to something pretty awesome I’m giving away.
3 Reasons Warcraft Movie Might Fail
3. Films based off Video Game series has done poorly at the box office. This has held for 90% of all films based off a video game. Not even lying, name me a film based on a video game that was widely a success? While series like the Resident Evil films have done good enough to kick out the number of sequels they have. This doesn’t, however, say they are good films.
There are always issues with the story being either not there like in Doom so the story ends up being made up or the story is too much driven by gameplay which you can’t do on screen.
2. The film is based off Warcraft not World of Warcraft. Many will go into these expecting elements, characters, and plots that we see in World of Warcraft and that’s simply not true. The Warcraft movie is loosely based on the story that was told in the first game, Warcraft Orcs & Humans and I believe it’s taking a place a bit before that.
The Warcraft movie shows us the Orcs leaving their homeworld behind coming to Azeroth to which case war breaks out between the humans of Azeroth and the Ocs from Draenor, which later is called Outlands after it’s been ripped apart. To which case a bigger threat appears where they must unite.
1. It’s a Lord of the Rings rip-off. As weird as that sounds this is the biggest reason I feel people might end up staying away even more so than it is based off a video game or that it has little to do with the story of World of Warcraft. This is an issue, however, any film in this genre will have simply because the look, the style will come across as the same.
A problem indeed when something is visually done right, anything after it will be compared to it and if it’s too close or on the head of it, it’s a copy if not it’s crap because it’s not. A sort of damn if you do, damn if you don’t kind of thing.
That all being said, I feel the film will be and so far is successful as the numbers have come out already from the overseas.
- The movie did $31.8 million in the 20 markets from the first-weekend release.
- It opened in 8 more markets since then, adding a total of $29 million through Sunday.
- It was the number one movie in seven of the eight new markets.
- Warcraft is still the #1 movie after 9 days in Germany and still at #2 in Russia.
- The international release has a total of $69.1 million so far.
- The movie opens in China on Wednesday, where pre-sale numbers look strong.

These numbers are as of June 5th so they have already changed a bit. The Warcraft movie is opening June 10th here in the United States, along with other big blockbuster films this seems now to be the key to if a film is somewhat successful financially. That doesn’t mean with fans, and even know the film might end up making it’s budget back it might be seen overall as a bad film by fans to which we might not get another film or us will but the cost to make it will be lowered and we’ll end up with a lackluster film series that no one really wanted.
While the Warcraft movie has yet to be seen in the United States it’s already getting bad reviews from critics, as of June 6th the film has 18% Rotten Tomatoes based on 44 reviews which honestly I saw coming just because of the whole idea and the fact much of the film was gonna be based off an early story which doesn’t have a whole lot going on.
I have not read any of said reviews yet and likely won’t because I am sure most of them will point out many of the flaws the film was based on my list above as well as pointing out plot holes, story, and character issues the film may have. If anything Warcraft might win over fans with the look, I hope that the film does well enough over the summer to promote another.
The direction the film is taking and what happens I’m 100% sure the next film will end up being based on the life of Thrall growing up a slave and his rise to becoming the Warchief of the Horde. Along with those lines, the story of the Forsaken and the coming threat of the Burning Legion.
So far I have not read anything about the idea of a sequel being made or talk about as of yet. I’m not sure if Blizzard is set on how the Warcraft movie ends up turning out, what they expected and if they got the results they had. With Overwatch, Hearthstone, and the next WoW Expansion coming this Fall, I doubt the film will hurt Blizzard or the series itself. It would be honest cool to see a sort of gate open for other films by Blizzard such as Diablo, Starcraft, and Overwatch, they could even go as far as doing a crossover between them all in the form of Heroes of the Storm.
Honestly, I’m gonna see it, nothing that has been said about the film has made me not want to see it. I’ve been a fan of Warcraft for years, playing the first games and playing the hell out of Warcraft 3 and of course as this website exists the MMO.
How I’d like to see things play out given how this film was set up, they could bring in the undead in the next film building up the story for the final to which would more or less be base off Warcraft 3 story.
This would be cool to see, to which if things go well they could even on the next series of films do say Vanilla WoW and introduce more of the lore and the Dragons into it. The next Warcraft movie would end up I think being returning to Outland and the threats of it and the final film being the return of the Lich King, I almost really feel that story would have to be told in two films just given everything.
It’s wishful thinking because they might end up going a whole other direction and not follow the story of the games as close. I do feel two things they will do to round out the films of Warcraft 2 and 3 would be that there is a bigger threat aka Burning Legion and the Lich King which are both tied together. It could be fun and I’d love to see those Warcraft Movies made.
Not gonna lie, I’ll see the film opening night if the film sucks well shit it sucks and I’ll let you know here with a review no matter how it ends up turning out in the end. I’ll be honest if I loved it or if I hated it, I’m sure I’ll love it because I’m such a big fan.
