The premiere of Power Rangers Beast Morphers was super amazing, which to be fair, I was shocked. Power Rangers Beast Morphers Episode 1 was by far one of the best premieres of Power Rangers in a very long time. This is the first season being run under Hasbro, who picked up the franchise last year. I talked about my thoughts on the release of the opening theme of Power Rangers Beast Morphers a few days ago. I told myself, I would at least review the first episode.
What I didn’t expect was the fact I was going to like it.
Beast Morphers Episode 1 Beasts Unleashed
A fitting name for a first episode, something to be fair that Power Rangers honestly has been in a horrible state for the last 8 years. I remember when Power Rangers Samurai was coming on, I was sort of hype for it. I mean Saban was taking control of Power Rangers again. After the ending run of Disney which I felt was rather lackluster at bests. The last season I had really watched was Mystic Force. Jungle Fury was okay, but the Sentai version was just too good for me to get into the America one.
I had to remember that it’s an adaptation so it’s okay to be different. Still, when you look back at other seasons like Dino Thunder, SPD (both of which were the best of the Disney Power Rangers) going even longer back to Time Force, In Space, all amazing seasons which I felt where better than the Sentai version. Hey! We are all welcome to our own opinions.
Something each Season of Neo-Saban seems to do was have strong opening episodes and then fall flat. Dino Charge I thought I’d like. I end up hating most of it. Ninja Steel I thought was okay, again end up kind of stopping after episode 8. The last time I’d talked about Power Rangers for a long time.
Honestly, it was fitting to the episodes name, because I felt like the Beast had been Unleashed.
The Characters Of Power Rangers
Why is Tommy the one Ranger everyone remembers? Jason, Zach? While they are all OG rangers, you have others like Andros, Jack from SPD, where all great. Why? Because their characters and build were to who they become is awesome. Tommy is always gonna be the best Rangers of all, not because he played the two most badass Rangers ever (Green Ranger and White Ranger of MMPR). He also was in the most episodes across everything.
I’ve always felt like Power Ranger’s attitude was lacking, while it’s a kids show and shouldn’t be taken too seriously and remember it’s a kid show. As an adult, I have to remember that. However, I found myself instantly liking the cast and the way they came together, the backstory for each Ranger was awesome.
For the first time, in a really long time after watching an episode of Power Rangers, I wanted to watch more. While I miss the old days of hour-long opening seasons or two-part episodes showing at once. I really felt like the quality of the show has gone up now that Hasbro has taken over. I feel connected to the characters like I can enjoy this even as an Adult.
The Story of Power Rangers
One thing that people these days care about, is story continuity. We live in a world of the MCU, everyone is trying to build their own shared universe of movies and TV now. So if you think about it, Power Rangers was the first TV Universe, even know for the most part MMPR to In Space was, for the most part, the same show, the same world, etc.
After In Space, each season was a sort of restart or reboot given they took place in a new city, another time or planet (Lost Galaxy). They kept, for the most part, the same continuity in terms of the story, adding on them. World building is something people really love.
Something I felt that the Disney Era of Power Rangers really lacked after SPD was world building and continuity. While it was super cool to see Adam come back as the Black Rangers. The reasons for his powers returning and even Lord Zedd’s son just seemed lazy to me.
Which is why I loved how Beast Morphers try to connect itself to the past shows, even going as far as to connect itself not just to the Neo-Saban era, but Disney and old Saban (MMPR) days. That I loved and it got me more invested with the story wanting to know more about.
Return to Basics
What Beast Morphers has to do other than just being better than Ninja Steel, is try to not be better than what came before, but be good on its own. While I feel it’ll be nice to have callbacks to past seasons, rangers, etc there isn’t any way they can’t. Given how they are really building on them taking control of the Morphing Grid. An idea I really am loving that they are doing and hope they really play well into it.
I think this can be a great season if they are given time to build the story. Please just give us 26 episodes. While some people would love to have that 50+ again as MMPR had. I’ll be honest, there is a lot of episodes in MMPR that could just be cut out or skipped and it doesn’t hurt the overall story.
This something many TV shows suffer from. They either give us too much or too little. I felt like most of the Disney Era shows gave us just enough, Dino Thunder, SPD and Mystic Force I felt being that 38 – 32 episodes. That being Samurai was 20 episodes for Season 1. To be fair, however, how most hated the “Super” thing between Samurai, Megaforce, Dino Charge, Ninja Steel each of those shows end up being 40 episodes each.
To be fair, I will give Samurai and maybe Ninja Steel being full one story 40 episodes. Megaforce and Super Megaforce felt like two different shows and honestly should have been such. Samurai had it’s moments too. Dino Charge I felt was two different shows too, one being better than the others about the same thing. Will we have a Super Beast Morphers show? I hope not.
Overall, I felt like Beast Morphers was a good start. My first impression was rather good and I’ll be watching episode 2 and more than likely be looking at the toys once those start coming out some point later this year.
What did you think? Have you watched it yet? Do you think I should do more follow of discussions of future episodes? Maybe down the road, an Unboxing of the new Beast Morphers toys will come. For now, I’m happy with what Hasbro has given us. They have a lot to live up too. I won’t be too hard on them if they don’t hit it, after all, I feel like this is the real first time Hasbro has taken on live-action kids show before.
I will also not watch Go-Busters in full until after Beast Morphers is over. Simply because I feel like for me, watching the Sentai ruin my watching of many of the past shows.
