Super Saiyan 5 Goku is not real. Let’s just clear the water on that one right off the get-go. It’s funny as today I was trying to think of good discussions to bring to Majin Planet. That would both be entertaining and education to new and old-time readers of Majin Planet. In my room, on my board, I have a collection of pictures and other objects I’ve collected over the years. Such as I have some pictures of family, tickets, and events I went too as well as some old pictures I printed out at school back in high school.
I do want to say that this was 1998-1999 when I printed them. Some of the pictures are Pokemon 2000, a picture of Goku and Vegeta as Super Saiyan 4 and one that stood out. Super Saiyan 5 Goku from the infamous Dragon Ball AF or Dragon Ball After Future or if I remember some even called it After Trunks. I remember so well that I thought this was gonna be new from Goku was gonna take, then a picture of Gohan as Super Saiyan 4 came out on a Dragon Ball Fansite I used to visit.
Like many, I too thought it was real until I kind of thought about it and with enough digging and looking you can tell it was fake. For many years I had no idea where it came from. I figured it was just someone who came up with it as fan art for their fan manga. As there are a ton of them all over with different stories and whatnot. I’ve even heard there was a Super Saiyan 6.
The Truth behind Super Saiyan 5
Oddly enough the first image of Goku as Super Saiyan 5 showed up in the May 1999 issue of a Spanish magazine Hobby Consolas drawn by David Montiel Franco. Later the following year in October a website called Majin.com (ironic isn’t it?) posted it as saying it was the new Super Saiyan 5 Goku form and stated that Dragon Ball AF was a real thing.
The following month the admin of Majin.com apologized and said they were tricked by a con artist.
Given Majin.com was an English website the misinformation went viral over the internet and this was before the word ‘viral’ was even a thing. Many fans believe it to be real and it led to many fans creating their fan base artwork and fan fiction based on this one picture.
Legally and officially Dragon Ball AF does not exist. Prove this there are several official sources.
First Akira Toriyama did publicly state that he had no intention of continuing the series after it had ended in 1995 with Dragon Ball GT. Even now he did draw a parody Nekomajin with several Dragon Ball characters appeared.
No AF In Japan
As we all know this later was not the case as we later got the OVA Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!. Akira Toriyama did return to the series with his design work on Dragon Ball Online.
There was also zero advertising in Japan of Dragon Ball AF or Super Saiyan 5 Goku. The main source would have been Shonen Jump, TV Ads, Dragon Ball websites, etc. Dragon Ball is one of the biggest Anime worldwide. So a new series in any shape or form would not go unnoticed like that. Just look at how Dragon Ball Kai and Super were done.
Prove that AF doesn’t exist beyond fandom. There were no announcements by anyone involved with Dragon Ball at any level. Not Toriyama, Shueisha, or Toei Animation every made any announcements of AF. There has been no merchandising, no manga scans or episodes have ever been found beyond what fans have created.
Was there Dragon Ball AF
Lastly, both Viz Meda and FUNimation Entertainment who are the distributors of Dragon Ball Manga and Anime in the United States. They have denied such rumors of Dragon Ball AF.
To be honest I think it’s pretty clear that after 17 years and no official Dragon Ball AF or Super Saiyan 5 Goku has ever shown up. It’s safe to say it’ll never happen. I know there are several fans out there who still believe this is real. I hope such fans find this post and learn the truth. Dragon Ball AF and Super Saiyan 5 and everything beyond that is fandom and nothing more.
Grand Tour or Goku Trunks?
Some fans have even gone as far as to show proof that Super Saiyan 5 is a thing because of a dub change in the TV version of Dragon Ball GT. It was mentioned by Bulma in the Dragon Ball GT episode The Heart of the Prince.
To which when Bulma is building the machine to help Vegeta reach Super Saiyan 4 she states: “Okay…now we just need to get the conditions right for you. After that, you might even reach Super Saiyan 5!” in which Vegeta’s reponse: “Super Saiyan 5!? Are you serious!? You really believe I could surpass Kakarot!?” This simple dub change just put fuel on the fire.
Now I have not watched Dragon Ball GT in a long time. So I’m not sure if on the uncut version of those lines still exist or not. I know beyond the Dragon Ball Season sets released by FUNimation years ago and then The Complete Series set that was later released. So I can’t tell you if it’s been changed or not. But still, this was a dub change and is not in the official Japanese track of GT.
Canon No More
I can’t tell you if this was FUNimation poking fun at the idea or not. Still, it was something I wish FUNimation had not done personally as GT already is pretty bad. Even if let’s say it was GT is no longer canon. The series is seen as a stand-alone anime now.
Overall the whole debate over if Dragon Ball AF and Super Saiyan 5 Goku are real or not. Will never really end. In my research on these topic reading forums, wiki pages, archive posts, etc.
One person states that it’s fake with proof and you get 5 more saying it’s real with “proof”. A fun little discussion and to be honest I had a lot of run talk about it today.
