Today I want to take a look the first Saga of Dragon Ball Super, the Battle of Gods Saga which takes place Episodes 1-14. I won’t go into too much detail about what happens due to the fact this saga is a rehash of the film Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods which is a direct sequel to the original Dragon Ball Manga. However, that is up for debate due to the fact Dragon Ball Super also showcases the events of the film with a bit of a different twist to them.
Due to the story behind Super, taking Goku and gang to new universes revealing that there are other versions of themselves and the events that happened in Dragon Ball to Z it’s very likely that what we saw in Battle of Gods is one version of the even so both the film and the Super Episodes are canon. You also have the manga chapters of Battle of Gods which those would be canon to the Dragon Ball Manga itself.
I won’t go into details about the animation issues as there was a ton of issues with animation in these early episodes to some point Goku didn’t even look like Goku, clipping and what not. Most animes are subject to some bad animation but given how popular Dragon Ball is even after all these years you’d think they’d get a bit more budget to the animation. But that aside let’s take a look at what happens.
Battle of Gods vs Super
Basically, the Battle of Gods Saga follows Goku and friends showing what they are all doing after the events of the Majin Buu Saga. Super takes place a few months to perhaps a year after the Majin Buu Saga but before the last episode of Dragon Ball Z which takes place ten years after Majin Buu was defeated. This is where Super drops the ball from the get go. Whether or not Super takes place a week, a month or a year after Buu, I believe it’s clearly stated in the Battle of Gods film how much time had past. I will be brought up the film a bunch in this review due to the fact they are so close in content with only small changes to the plot and in some cases, those changes created bigger plot holes than the film caused.
First off there is the question of Goten and Trunks who have a bigger role in Super than the film but were still pretty much left out when the fight between Goku and Beerus takes place. The way Beerus has his dream of the Super Saiyan God is different from the film, adding more time in him hunting it down vs the film. We also see a few the fights between Goku and Beerus which I was happy was done differently.
It doesn’t have the high-end animation the film had, again not going into the animation but it’s good to see they took the time to reanimated a lot of these episodes rather than reusing the film. Which I believe they did at times which might explain the problem with the animation.
If you’ve seen Battle of Gods you can really skip these episodes, they don’t share anything you haven’t already seen. You get a bit more into what Goku and Vegeta are doing. The same plot hole exists which makes me believe the last episode of Z is being changed due to Pan. In the last episode of Dragon Ball Z, We meet everyone ten years later. Goten and Trunks are all grown up and Pan is about 4-5 years old now. She is ready to fight just like her grandpa and of course, Goku tells Vegeta about Uub who was about 9 or 10 having been reborn after Goku asked him to be after his battle with Kid Buu.
That all being said, in both Battle of Gods and Super, Goku needs 5 Saiyans to give him power. They had Vegeta, Gohan, Goten and Trunks which was 4. Videl steps in revealing to the group she is pregnant and the baby is half Saiyan. They try it and her body glows almost showing her to appear super Saiyan. With the baby’s ki, they are able to help Goku become Super Saiyan God.
You can see the problem here, as Pan would be born a short 9 months later after this, which would make her at the time of the last episode of Z 10 years old at the least, not 4-5. Given these episodes are based on the manga chapters of Battle of Gods and the film making it confusing on what’s what. The best way to look at the problem is to keep all the movies as a canon, the anime as another and the manga the true canon.
Overall the episodes are okay, as I said before if you’ve seen the film you can skip the first 14 episodes of Super. There is nothing new that happens, the small details, some add more plot holes to the story and the fact the changes to characters ages and looks is a problem. Bulma, in my opinion, looks way younger than she did even in the Buu Saga.
Even with the different in how animation is done today in 2015 vs 1990. It wouldn’t have been hard to age her, same with Goten and Trunks and there is the question of Bulma’s mother who hasn’t aged once in the whole series which leaves some really crazy theories as to why. If you’re a fan of Dragon Ball and haven’t seen Battle of Gods I would recommend Battle of Gods over Super episode 1-14. Either way, you get the same information and you will have no problem watching later episodes of Dragon Ball Super.
