What a crazy time Kamen Rider Zi-O was, in Zi-O Final Episode we finally get some answers to our questions. An ending that is, for the most part, a crazy ending. One that I kind of figured as much would happen in a show about rewinding time, time travel and just the element of time is a big part. Now having watched Kamen Rider Zi-O Episode 49 live, it was a crazy ride. For those of you who have not watched Kamen Rider Zi-O or not watched the last episode, I would stop reading now.
Spoilers Zi-O Final Episode!
You have been warned, after this, I’m gonna be talking about some elements of the final episode, things I liked and things I didn’t like and some things that might confuse people.
There are elements of the show that changed, things that got skipped over I think for a time but are there.
So let’s get right into the final episode of what might be got down as one of the most hated Kamen Rider shows, but with the best ending to not just a show but a whole era that the last era never truly had.
Oma Zi-O is Born
So if you watched last weeks preview, we see that Sougo finally gets the Oma Driver and looks like he becomes the 2018 version of Oma Zi-O. Unlike the movie, which Oma Zi-O in the future gives his younger self a watch that has his power. This was called Zi-O Oma Form.
Whether you take the Rider films as canon to the show or not. The film does some things that I feel we should have got in the show. Such as the Drive watch is a big part of the last arch of the show, that Grand was not finished yet because Sougo had not been properly given the watch.
Going back to Oma Zi-O I always thought he had the power of all 20 past main riders. But we learn he doesn’t just have all the main ones but ALL riders as shown in a shot with all the ride watches. If you notice, there are watches that area other riders too. Meaning Sougo rules over all Riders of the Heisei era, any rider that appeared.
Final Form Grand or Oma?
Some debate over which is Sougo’s final form as Kamen Rider Zi-O has been risen by the community. This, not the first time a rider has gotten a number of forms that are stronger than the ‘Super Form’. In past shows, the Main Rider will have his base form and what is generally called subforms that add a bit more power and a new weapon. Generally, this is used for the plot to fight the monster of the week.
With Zi-O his power-ups are the past 20 riders as Armor Time. The Decade Watch is his Super form because not only is it a boost over other watches armors but he can also use other watches with it. This gives him their super forms of that said Rider.
It makes sense because Zi-O is the 20th Heisei Rider and Decade was the 10th. Both shows being an anniversary show. Which also lead to many people calling this show Decade Season 2 as once he got the Decade watch, he overused it plus the character of Decade was shown a lot more. Especially in the final arch, he becomes a regular cast member.
That being said, Zi-O gets three forms which all are stronger but the debate on which is truly his final form. I think after watching this episode it’s clear that Trinity, Oma Form, and Grand are really super forms. I would say that the Trinity is the strongest. While I have not seen the film with Oma Form yet. Again a movie, is it canon?
Clearly, Oma Zi-O is a final form and his strongest form. If it was not clear, watch that final fight again.
The Good of Zi-O
Let’s go over the things I liked about the show, these are in no order, I just think it’s best to do a list and of course, later I’ll go into more detail at a later date. You can always ask me on Twitter by Tweet me #ZiOGood to @MajinPlanet.
- Oma Zi-O Henshin was the best damn thing I’ve ever seen in Kamen Rider and it makes sense why he is called the Demon King.
- Seeing past actors return and not AR versions like in Decade.
- Zi-O got me to want to watch Drive and Build, two shows I skipped because the previews didn’t really draw me in.
- Woz man! I wish he would get his own show, the actor was amazing and his character was by far the best of them all.
- The watch theme. I like how the whole theme was the watches and I feel it did a better job than past Riders and their themes.
- Decade is back! While I had seen Black and Black RX and watched Kiva the year before, Decade really got me into it, watching Double, Den-O, Blade, and others.
- Geiz was a wonderful and really great secondary rider, I generally don’t care too much for them.
The Bad of Zi-O
SO let’s talk about the main things I really didn’t like. Like many people, there are plot issues, sub-plots that got dropped and things that simply weren’t explained. Some things like the time loop that was going on that is more a theory I think than truth.
- The Time Travel was messy, Decade was all about world jumping. Show show set that each world has its own rider.
- Past Riders being in Zi-O’s World. If you go by Decade, there should not have been any past riders in Sougo’s world.
- When Sougo got a new watch that Rider’s history was erased and the memories of thsoe people gone.
- Oma Zi-O as the ‘bad guy’ and the real threat really being underplayed and the plot behind it being done badly.
- Tsukuyomi was the only main cast member character I really didn’t like and her being the center of the plot at the end was weak.
- Oma Day and the Plot was super confusing and didn’t know where it was going until the final 10 or so episodes.
Oma Day and the Plot
The ideal of the show was, Sougo took the powers of all the riders and became Oma Zi-O. He destroyed the world and then ruled over it and was an evil overlord. As shown in the first episode and a few times younger Sougo went to the future to defeat him. What I got from the ending of 49 was this.
Sougo is trapped in a time loop, think of this as the Matrix Reloaded. If you understand that plot of that film, you will get Zi-O rather easily. This is the best way I can explain the plot. That from the start of the show, the worlds are already merging, linking which is why Zi-O travels back in time, to the history of another world. The more watches he collects the closer the mergers happen. Until he gets Grand Watch.
At some point, Swartz’s world starts to die, to save his world, he has to merge all Rider worlds together. This destroying those Riders. He can no do this, so he finds someone who can be the King of all Riders. Enter Sougo. Giving him this power, Sougo becomes Oma Zi-O on the day that Swartz merges the world. Think of this has the Prime Timeline.
Swartz is not strong enough to defeat Oma Zi-O and such he loses but the result is Oma-Zi-O destroys the world, taking all Rider powers and their history. For 50 years he searches for a way to save the world while playing the evil overlord. No one knows why the world is the way it is. Gezi and Tsukuyomi fight Oma Zi-O but then a younger Zi-O appears before them and fights Oma-Zi-O saving them.
This gives them the idea to travel back and stop Zi-O so Oma day never happens. Basically, a number of Zi-O’s form the past have come before Oma Zi-O and each one end up going down the same path. This is why Oma Zi-O kind of is helping his younger self. Telling him things to push him forward. To lead him to Oma. I kind of th0ought of this loop going on about midway into the show. What if Oma was trying to fix things but needed a way to do it in the past?
We don’t know how many times the loop happened, but in one time of history, Geiz’s gets a new form and kills Oma before he gets his power, stopping Oma day.
This timeline happens because Sougo becomes Zi-O earlier than he was supposed too. This is confusing because we have what is more or less three timelines here. But the question is, was White Wolz’s timeline really another timeline or is it the current one we now have after 49?
Remember, Geiz kind of saved the world as he gave Sougo the will to become his best self, Oma Zi-O but now he knows the end result is able to make another choice. Something the prime Sougo never had.
Of course, you have the film which revealed that Sougo from the show is not the real one, but a version the prime Sougo created to collect the rider powers so he could become King of Time. This really messes up the whole theory and begs the question. Is Oma in the future a future version of the real Sougo who failed or the one from the film? Confusing I know.
The Zi-O Final Loop
In the end, Zi-O becomes Oma because Geiz gets killed and tells him to become Oma Zi-O, that he has what it takes to be that ruler. In anger, sadness Sougo understands and we learn that the Time Driver in fact evolves into the Oma Belt. After we reach the point to which Oma destroyed the world because the effects of the fight and the world merging. I believe that the reason Sougo can meet past riders in his time is that the worlds are already merging at the start of the show.
The loop ends, because of this time around, Sougo gains real friends and chooses to not rule a world without them. He rewrites history to have all his friends together back before everything starts. So the show ends in 2018, the day before Tsukuyomi shows up with Geiz and he gets the Time Driver.
Most will say that Sougo remembers the old timeline because he is the one who rewrote history. We know for sure that Woz does, because he now carries a new book of Oma and states that Sougo is on the past to becoming Oma Zi-O or will he? The future is no longer written.
My final Impression of Zi-O
Of course, there is a lot about the show and this final episode I can talk about. But I wanna keep this a short sort of overview. I liked Zi-O and in time will go back and watch the whole thing again in about 6 months and do a full season review on it. I’m not sure how I will go about that just yet. I was generally happy with the ending. Then Sougo choosing the past of Oma but overruling a world with no one. He chooses to rewrite history with some changes so he can be happy and so can everyone else.
Honestly, I think with time, once we’ve gone maybe 5 years from now, Zi-O will become a cult classic. While there was a lot of problems with the show. Bring back old actors, giving them something to do. With a show that works mostly on each show being its own world as Decade has done in his show. Before that, it was always kind of like Super Sentai. They are in their own world.
With movies and special crossovers, it’s kind of like another universe. Build, Drive and Blade don’t co-exist in the same world’s history. They say like DC or Marvel. Different Earths. This is the biggest issue I had with Zi-O. With the going back in time to which each year a Rider existed. Even know this couldn’t be true due to events in those shows.
But it makes sense. I loved Zi-O and here I hope Zero One is just as good. Hopefully, they learn from the mistakes they made. A more clear plot as even a child would have found Zi-O to be confusing at time.
