I’m gonna come out and say it, I was gonna skip this episode. I’m not a big-time musical fan that I can’t lie about. For a good part of my life, musicals just weren’t my thing. There are a few films I’ve watched, you know the classics like Wizard of Oz, which is a musical, a rather good one. But overall that is pretty much the limit of the films I can watch and not think about the fact it’s a musical.
Generally in a TV show that is a serious drama and really more so a superhero TV show, having a musical episode in the middle of what’s going on seems silly to me. But of course, for the Flash and Supergirl crossover, this was a bit more to just being a silly musical.
Okay, I’m gonna come out and say that this was a rather good episode. I think why this worked was because the plot made sense to what is going on both Supergirl and the Flash. Granted I have not been watching Supergirl, at least not past Superman leaving the show after 3 episodes. That is another topic altogether.
What loved was all the little puns and easter eggs they dropped. It’s amazing that most of the cast, for both shows, have actors and actresses who can sing for real. There was no dubbing of voices here. Even know it might appear that both Berry and Kara had their voices dub over by someone else. This happens a lot in films where someone has to sing and they can’t. This is because they dub them over in a post to get the full effect of the song and music.
Voice over and dub work is very common in films, so I wasn’t shocked at all. The song with Supergirl and Flash, all the puns to each other was just amazing good and made me laugh a great deal.
The Plot moved Forward
When I had heard they had an episode like this planned, I just thought filler. I’m sure tons of people might have thought the same thing. But this episode while silly and way out there really moved the plot of The Flash forward to a point it needs to be. Such as Barry and Iris’s engagement which an episode was broken. Which was rather fast given last episodes ‘break’ they had. But it was a plot that had been played out and it’s good they took care of it.
For the Supergirl side of the plot with her love on and off with Mon-El I really can’t common on, I had an idea of what is kind of going on there. But as I’m not an active watcher of Supergirl I can’t tell you how this will effect that show next week.
Still Better Than the Films
Even with how silly, over the top and downright overboard with the gimmicks the CW superhero shows have been. They get it right and make it fun. Because we have the comic books for that deep dark serious stuff. You can take your time reading and enjoy. While some of that dark and serious feel should be there if you’re not having fun why bother? I feel that is why Marvel while following the same cookie cutter plots since Iron Man still works. The actors have fun.
They had fun.
Watching this you can tell that everyone on board has a ton of fun making this episode and having happy cast, means a great show. These crossover episodes are great and yes I will say that this was better than last year’s Flash/Supergirl crossover.
Truly Flash and Supergirl are true superfriends and to be honest. Man, I kind of want to see an episode with Superman and Flash. I think if, IF Arrow does bring in Batman into the story, it will be freaking amazing and a true dream to see Flash, Superman, and Batman altogether.
A note about that…
Okay, off topic a bit, Yes I’m aware we are getting Justice League this fall. BUT let’s face it. The Superman that we got in the few episodes in Supergirl this season was a billion times better than the films, Batman, I don’t know and Supergirl has been the best version of the character we’ve seen live action. So there is that. But damn, I have hope that DC will learn from what they are doing on TV because while some things might not apply to me; it’s working.
What can I say? I was shocked by this episode. I’ll be rather happy to get back to next week and find out what is gonna happen with Savitar and what other little shocks we have because I have a deep feeling we’ll learn who Savitar is.
