I’m a big fan of Steve Carell and everything but this movie was well, it wasn’t one of this best films I’ve seen. There are a few reasons why this film in my opinion fails to bring to the table what I feel it was supposed to do. After all the trailers gave this one view of the film. After seeing it, well that wasn’t the case.
First off the trailer gave me the opinion that it’s about a young boy who is bullied and on his birthday gets a magic set which changes his life, he starts to do magic and meets a long time friend. Together they reach the top of the magic world, until something bigger and better shows up. This new magician shows up and steals the spotlight which lends Burt to fight to retake his job and life.
But that isn’t what we got, yes I’ll agree that was the flow of the film, but there was something they didn’t show in the trailer that the movie had, that is Burt was a jerk, basically he came the bully himself. He’s a jerk to women, down right disrespectful and sees them as just a tool for him to use. He’s even an ass hole to his best friend and everyone around him.
So when the new magician played by Jim Carry shows up and steals his thunder to the point he loses his job and loses everything because he just spends his money without care. So yeah when Jim Carry comes in, even know what he’s doing isn’t really magic in my opinion, he still had it coming. I really disliked Burt Wonderstone and didn’t feel at all sorry for him.
The film is supposed to be warmhearted and have a life lesson I suppose but at the end I didn’t believe the characters turn around so I didn’t by the come back he got. That being said, that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the movie in fact it had some funny parts which made me chuckle. I really loved how over the top Jim Carry was in his classic style.
The cast was amazing in the roles, it’s too bad the script wasn’t better and honestly I can’t really hate the film because of a weak script. I will however knock points off for it, I’ve seen much worst so really it’s not the end of the world. The fact it was about magic and the ending made me really laugh, I’d say if you haven’t seen it yet you should at least rent it. It’s worth that much.
