Superman is by far one of the most popular characters ever to exist. When you look back at his rich history, the character and the themes, it’s no wonder it’s a household name. So it really does bother me why there was never a really good Superman movie.
When you think about it, there’s many stories you could do about Superman, so when Man of Steel was announced, I wasn’t all that thrilled because of what happen with Superman Returns. But after seeing this, I can respect that they took the core of what Superman is and gave us a “begins” treatment.
Unlike Returns, this is a full on reboot of the series, we start on Krypton where the planet is facing imminent destruction due to its unstable core, the result of years of depleting Krypton’s natural resources. The ruling council is deposed by the planet’s military commander General Zod and his followers. Now here is where many people will find things different then you might remember from past Superman movies.
Many of the same elements exist, such as Jor-El and his wife sending Kal-El to Earth before Krypton’s end. I’m not gonna spoil anything for you but it really gives more depth I think to the story and adds more build up to the later conflicted with Zod.
The movie moves along and we meet Clark as he is traveling the world, working different jobs just trying to make ends meet but he’s also saving people in secret without being found out. We get flashbacks here and there about Clark growing up and how he deals with his powers.
Unlike past Superman movies, this Superman doesn’t just know how to be Superman, he just trying to do his best with what he knows. They also change Lois Lane’s role from having to be saved all the time to being somewhat useful to Superman. At this point no one knows about Superman, heck he not even called Superman until the end of the movie.
I love how when Clark is learning how to fly once he discovers who he is and what his reasons for being sent to Earth are, his first flight is just him jumping really high. Which is a toss back to the original story of Superman. He never could fly when he was first created. That’s why it says Superman can leap tall buildings single bound. I loved that and I love how they made Superman not able to save everyone.
To be honest this is a pretty dark movie because a whole lot of people end up dying. Henry Cavill did an amazing job in the movie and like I talked about in my Who will be Batman in Superman and Batman? I think they should focus and make one more Superman Movie, it has so many set-ups. They created a world that is not sure of Superman and that makes it amazing.
Overall I give Man of Steel a 4 out of 5 rating. While it was one of the best Superman movies I’ve seen in ages, it did have flaws and it was a little hard to go with some of the story plots. Like for example why the hell did Zod request for Lois Lane to come to the ship too. I also thought the reason Clarks dad dies was a little weak, it seemed forced almost more than anything. I totally recommend seeing it while you can or wait for the DVD which I’ll be picking up.
