One of my favorite comic book super heroes of all time. Why do I like spiderman? I can relate to his problems as Peter Parker, and just think if a radioactive spider bit me? Well let’s get on to the review here. Spiderman has been in the making since the 1980’s, and the reason it wasn’t made was with the crappy Spiderman live action TV show, the studio wanted to do it right. Finally in 1999 the film began and in 2001 we got our wish. Spiderman broke all records when it was released world-wide. The story of a high school nerd who is bitten by a super spider and becomes one of the greatest super heroes of all time.
Starting Tobey Magure, Willem Dafae, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Cliff Roberston and Rosemary Harris at first look I wasn’t two sure on some of the parts as I didn’t think they could pull it off. Namely Tobey Magure who I thought at first was a bad choice to play Peter Parker/Spiderman. Reason being in my eyes he just didn’t fit the bill for the part. Maybe as Peter Parker, but I always thought Peter was taller than that of Tobey Magure. In any case I didn’t think he could pull off the acting humor as Spiderman does. But as more and more pictures from the film were leaked and the trailers hit the world-wide web, tv and movie theaters I start to see the light and that was all I needed. They did a super job with this film, unlike many other super hero films which either totally change the story only doing the basic info or likeness of it. Spiderman hits it on the nail. The actors transformations into their roles was super and the crew did something most people have only dreamed of. They made Spiderman, Spiderman.
In this film the special effects was everything. No matter what almost 80% of spiderman’s stunts are done with the computer and no way a real stunt man could do some of the stunts that spiderman can do. I was afraid that they would end up looking to fake as most films that use CGI characters don’t use them too much due to the fact that they look fake vs the real actors. But when I saw the first clips of spiderman flying around it looked very good. However in an all CGI world it would look real, but what would the CGI Spiderman look good on a real background with real actors around him. There was only 2 moments in the film where I could say it was totally fake. The first time Peter is Spiderman to save his Uncle Ben climbing the call up and when they did the close up shot of him shooting his web. The webbing was just way to thin and the render and shadowing on Spiderman when he wasn’t in his suit just look a bit fake as could have been better.
However it wasn’t enough to break my love of this movie as I have seen some really bad movies in my life time and this is not one of them. Green Goblin was really one of the great shots in the film with him riding around on his glider. The first scene where Spiderman and Green Goblin starting a little fight on the side of the building, really at that moment I was just in shock. They finally took the super hero from the comic pages and made him real.
Very good script, and overall the story worked. However some things were changed and put out of place to set up some key elements faster. Out of everything one thing did bother me and that was Mary Jane, as he doesn’t met her until College but I guess this way it would set up his love for her faster for the film to just go. Another element that was out of place for me was his spider shooter. In the comic and just about ever story done on Spiderman he made his spider shooter. When he was bitten, the knowledge was passed down on how to make the webbing. but for the movie and the time of 2 hours having them built-in to his body like a real spider is was just simpler. I like the fact that they show you how spiderman climbs walls by showing he had thin hairs that grab the falls, but we all know that’s not how they do it. And its just funny how even with that Spiderman can still climb alls wearing gloves and boots. They had some good lines in the film and they did a overall good job telling the origin of spiderman here.
There was some more things I wanted to see in this film like how he made his spiderman suit, you get the hint that Harry’s Dad gives him the stuff to make it as when he tells him if there is anything he ever needs just ask. I don’t think Peter had rubber like that laying around and I don’t think you can buy it a any store. But overall it was very well done and I am happy with it. One of the coolest and best movie of 2001 I have to say. The fights where well done and Tobey did a super job as both Peter and Spiderman, even after the fact I thought he was a bad choice for the role.
What can I say other then out of all Marvel Super Hero’s he the most well known and favorite of all of them. The fact this movie has been in the making for about 20 years and that when it came out it broke almost every recored ever held and made more money on opening week then most do it 20 years. Fans love Spiderman and its no wonder that people are running and searching to get their fills as we wait for the 3rd Spiderman film to be release some time in 2006/2007.
Overall the movie was really a master piece on its own and the fact that its spiderman makes it even better. The overall effects of the movie was super and rivals the best of them and has been added to my video library and I plan to add the 3rd one when its release to video. The DVD comes with some really cool behind the scene stuff that you must check out. I’ve already seen spiderman more times then anything thing, almost as much as Star Wars but soon I’ll get there. The music sound track was alright, I like some of the music, but I think the film would have been better if they used just music like in star wars because some times hearing worlds in music breaks the mood. But nothing to take the score of this review down. Because was we all know that with great power, there comes great responsibility.
