So another year, another San Diego Comic-Con I missed out going too. One day, I tell you one day! That being said, all the news, features and other cool stuff about San Diego Comic-Con 2019 has hit the web, people are talking about it on YouTube, Social media, discord, you name it. So I thought I’d talk about what has me excited about San Diego Comic-Con and what came out of it that I can’t wait to see.
Crisis on Infinite Earth
You would think with me being a mega-fan of Marvel that the first thing I’d want to talk about would be Phase 4. Nope. There isn’t a lot of things to talk about when it comes to DC these days. With the original plans for a Justice League 2 and everything else that came out of that original set of films (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Justice League) the only things actor wise that still exist are Wonder Woman and Aquaman. But who’s to say that will even still be on the table.
No, what got me all pumped was all the talk about the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths, which is something I said years ago. Why not just say that every DC film that has been made since 1989 Batman all exist in one large multiverse? That’s kind of how DC has been for years now focusing on different worlds, universes and timelines than a single story universe (like Marvel) with the multiverse sort of just being an afterthought.
Burt Ward’s Robin.
Most people might know who that is, he’s the first-ever live-action version of Robin in the 60s Batman TV show. He will be appearing in the CW’s show crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths. What is even crazier than this is Brandon Routh, who played Superman in Superman Returns (a short-lived reboot at the series) who plays another character on the show Legends of Tomorrow is returning to play the role of Superman of his former role. That’s crazy.
The Arrowverse while I feel it’s sort of coming to an end in terms of being what it was, I feel like The Flash will get one or two more seasons, Batwoman in all truth, it’ll be one season long, maybe 2 if it’s lucky. I do feel Supergirl will be ending after a season and of course, Arrow is ending this Fall with Season 8. With all these actors coming back to play roles, some of which who haven’t played for more than a decade it makes me wonder, how long will this cross over be???
Star Trek Returns to TV
I was always more a fan of Star Trek than Star Wars honestly. While I could seat for days and talk about Star Wars and all the lore and stories. The problem with Star Wars is it’s very much pushed together and held together by one single story; The Skywalkers.
There are very few stories that go outside that box that did well. Even some of the best still came back to tie into the later Saga of Darth Vader.
Don’t get me wrong, honestly, people compare the two so much. You can’t really compare a Space Opera (Star Wars) and one that is more about finding the meaning of life (Star Trek). Still, when I heard about Star Trek Picard I was shocked, mostly because I didn’t think the next generation was really any good, at least not until season 3-4. To be fair they forced that show to be a copy of the original in terms of plots and stories for two seasons.
CBS Reaction to our Reaction
What more is there tell about Picard? Well, I guess we’re gonna find out. It looks good, it looks like it could be honest good. However… CBS. Look, I’ll keep this short and yes it’s a bit of a rant. When you make a reaction video to something, you wanna get hype for it, you wanna talk about it. When you’re a big YouTuber and your videos get 10, 20K views easy and your copyright strike the video and block it form anyone watching it because of well, the trailer being used.
CBS you messed up. A number of YouTubers, big and small had to redo or remove their reactions to the trailer being well CBS took them down. We’re in 2019 people love watching others react to stuff. I don’t agree with taking someone’s video like animation or whatever and reacting to it, but the movie and TV trailers? Come on! I was hype when I heard about it, but now. CBS you made me want to not watch your show now.
The Witcher Won’t Follow the Games.
So I played the first game somewhat, it’s a good game. I did read one of the books and I liked it and think it was a really good story. The show on Netflix? I’m not sure, people are calling it the next Game of Thrones, the problem was I wasn’t a big fan of that show. Truth be told, I didn’t really care much for it. I know go ahead and hate on me of that comment. But from what I heard, the season finale sucked and was a let down to long-time fans. So I think the Witcher will be good? I honestly think it will be if it goes one season or two.
From the trailer, I think Henry Cavill is gonna nail this, while I think it’s too bad that he won’t be Superman anymore. Let’s face it, WB as messed up which is shocking to me that they are even allowing the CW to go all balls in with their TV crossover.
I will have more about that another time. Still, the trailer was real and honestly made me more thrilled to what it than Game of Thrones. I mean people are comparing the two and I don’t think that is really fair given that the books are older and it has a game, more lore to draw from. Also given they already said that this is a new story and won’t follow anything the games have done.
Any time someone takes something that was already done and makes it something new while still showing respect and not making me lose who the characters are is always a good thing. This is why I feel the MCU has done so well. They draw inspiration from the comics but never actually just copy it which is boring. So I think the Witcher is a win here.
Marvel Phase 4
Fine, let’s talk about Marvel. Am I hype about the Phase 4 films. Yes and no. I will not lie Spider-Man Far From Home fell flat for me. It was still great but maybe I’m feeling that MCU Burn out. The Eternals, I need to see a trailer for this one. I know about them, I just don’t know about a movie on them. They kind of fall into the same place as the Inhumans did for me and we know where that went.
Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings; this one makes me happy and mad at the same time. I think having an Asian character and all are great for the film. Great for people and while I don’t know much about the character. I’m annoyed that it will feature the Mandarin, the real one.
Let’s not beat around the bush. At the time Iron man 3 was being written. they didn’t think a character like that of the Mandarin with his magical powers and all his weird stuff would fly. Remember, Doctor Strange hadn’t come out yet and Scarlet Witch they hadn’t done anything really with her yet. (they still haven’t but hopefully, that changes with the Wandavision show)
I mean he’s the freaking archenemy of Iron Man! Oh wait, you killed off Iron Man in Endgame, this film at best will take place a few years into the post-Endgame world. Remember Endgame ended in 2026 or whatever. So having the character without Iron Man, will kind of suck.
Natalie Portman as the Mightly Thor?
I heard that another Thor film was coming. I figured really that Thor would appear in Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3. Given how Endgame ended. However, so the idea of when that film is coming out. It’s clear that Thor will be in the new Thor, Love and Thunder film. When I heard the news that Natalie Portman would be taking on the Hammer and becoming the Female Thor.
All I could think of was what? I mean first I thought Portman was done with the MCU after she didn’t get her way in The Dark World.
But here we are, she’s coming back. I wonder what Marvel did to get her to come back given things? But more so, Cap took the hammer back with him to the past along with the stones. So how does Jane get the hammer? How does she get the hammer? Where does it come from? As far as we know it was still destroyed in Thor 3, that event wasn’t removed from the timeline after Endgames crazy story.
There is much more that happened, but all really I’m happy about, Black Widow, the Winter Soldier show, Loki, etc. What kind of took me for a loop and I will end this today with one world, for those of us who watched Marvel Films in their dark days and enjoyed them, there was one person who put Marvel back on track and gave them hope that they could make movies and it’s what got Iron man rolling, that was Blade.
When and how we don’t know, we just know that Mahershala Ali will be playing the MCU version of Blade. Of course, there was much more, but nothing I care to talk about much, at least at the moment.
