So at last, the 2nd trailer for Avengers Endgame has dropped. Normally I do reaction videos for these, but as of late YouTube has been putting copyright strikes on channels. It does seem they pick and choose who they do this too. Simply because there are many videos reactions out right now of Avengers Endgame. I have to tell you, that this trailer, there aren't words I can even begin to say.
Whatever it Takes - Avengers Endgame
Just like with Infinity War, redoing the lines that Nick Fury said about the Avengers formation, in this trailer we get a new tagline unlike the Superbowl TV spot and the first trailer. That some people move on, but not us. That is a rather cool tagline and I loved it. Whatever it takes.
On a personal level, that has more meaning to me than simply the context of the film. I will break down what I feel some of the big callbacks that they are doing. First, the line Whatever it takes. Before Iron Man, the idea of a series of films this large keeping the same story, building on each film. Even keeping the same actors. Now clearly there were some bumps in the first Phase, Rhodey was recast after one film, The Hulk was totally recast and the most disconnected of the MCU films.
Marvel with Disney's support has done whatever it has taken to make sure these actors stay, not just by paying them. It's clear that they have all made millions from doing these. Watching interviews on YouTube, it's clear to me that while they are big name actors; they care. I've never seen actors care so much, studio care so much about an IP to not just make good films but please fans while bringing in new fans.
Who are the Avengers?
I said this before, I'll say it again. Before Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and then coming together with the Avengers in 2012, no one really knew who Iron Man was. The Avengers was more or less a B level team compared to the X-Men. Yes not in the comics, as a comic fan and reader yes they are the A team; I'm speaking in terms of film franchises.
Coming to films, Hollywood, the big names was Spider-man, X-Men and for the most part sort of, Hulk. Yes, the Hulk was a household name. You have the Hulk TV show which was a big thing and the 2003 Hulk while bad still people knew the Hulk. Most didn't know who Thor was, most would say a live action film of Thor would be 'silly'. Captain America might be the only Avenger who the normal movie fan might have known.
This is what made the MCU so special, they took more or less B and even some cases like C level characters and made them A-lister characters and build not just a franchise of Iron Man, Ant-Man (Who the idea of it sound silly), etc.
Captain Marvel Arrives
Now if you haven't seen Captain Marvel yet, I'm gonna give you a big spoiler warning because this is the spoiler of the mid-credit scene. You have been warned.
In Captain Marvel, we see Steve and Nat looking that the Pager, wondering what it was. More so who did Fury call on it? When it goes dead, Rhodey shows up and they can't figure it out. Nat wants to know no matter what and turns to see Carol who's hair looks longer and suit a bit more sleek and older than shown in her movie. Remember 25 years would have passed. Her film takes place in 1995, while Avengers Endgame is going to take place in about 2018-2019.
We know this because The Battle for New York does happen in 2012. Tony says in Infinity War, that Thanos has been in his head for 6 years. Ever since he sent an army through a wormhole. Which puts us in 2018. Yes, the 8 Years later Title Card in Spider-Man Homecoming was an error likely done by Sony.
But the question is will she play a big role in the film?
Not what we think
Who remembers all those cool shots of the Hulk in Infinity War that end up being fake shots? Yup, me too. There are tons of shots in this trailer that for me scream fake or replace or changed to not spoil anything. First being Tony Stark walking with everyone. You also don't see Captain Marvel and you don't see Hulk.
I have a theory about this. I believe, that Captain Marvel isn't with them because she died. Now it could be that they have just removed her from the shots how they had removed Spider-Man. The problem is, that once they had shown Spider-man, some of those shots that had been edited turned and showed Spider-man.
Well, Captain Marvel is out, while you can't bank on everyone watching her film. Given all the bad press and poor word of mouth for Captain Marvel. But they show her at the end here with Thor. So the big question is why do we not see her with the team walking with the new white suits? You also don't see Thor nor see Banner/Hulk.
Overall, honestly, I'm happy, super happy they have not shown much to this film yet. They did say we'd only get about the first 20mins of footage and that was it. I like that they are going out of their way to make sure not to even spoil the story. Will there be a trailer 3? I don't think so.
We had the first trailer and a TV spot and now this one. With about 6 weeks until the film comes out, at this point we generally are getting the 3rd trailer, but I can see why they waited to release this one because of Captain Marvel shot. The biggest problem people have is Captain Marvel coming in and stopping Thanos on her own. I think she will have her moment and try, just like Thor did and fail.
She will realize she needs to work together with the team. Which might explain why she isn't around much. After all, it's to her character to work alone and often never trusts those she does work with.
I loved it and I'll be there on April 26th, whatever it takes I'll be there.
