I’ll come right out and say two things to start things off. First, the movie was amazing. I was pretty much sucked right into the film the whole time. The other, I’m gonna try and limit the number of spoilers in this review. However, some plot and the history of the character will be spoiled as it’s just needed to write an honest review.
Wonder Woman is what Batman v Superman should have been. Let me start off by saying in the world of DC. Everything about the film was done right. I hope those behind making the DCEU look at this film and make it the standard template. Just like Marvel made Iron Man the basic template. As someone who studies film and watched a ton of them.
I can tell you while Marvel itself has changed the formula up from time to time (The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy) those are films I felt broke the Marvel formula and this is something that DC needs to find. I feel they found it with Wonder Woman.
A Story of History
The film is set in the time of World War I and in a time when women are not respected. They are more so possessions with no rights. The film does not go too far into this. Which is good, because you would have people complain about it being done right or wrong. The movie gets right to the point of the plot. Giving you just enough to care about the characters for the most part. The group that she runs with are pretty cut and dry characters. Each of them has a point to the plot and have very little screen time for the most part. But they also don’t do anything to force you to feel like You should care about them.

This is a good thing. Films have a bad habit of bringing in supporting characters only to kill them later in some dramatic way having the main characters overreact as if we as the audience is supposed to care. We don’t.
Gal Gadot is HOT as Wonder Woman
I recall when the first cast Gal. Being very pleased the fact they didn’t get some busty model to play the role. Seeing some of the fan casting choices and I know it just comes from years and years of how she is shown in the comics. This is something all female superhero are forced to deal with, everyone.
The comics are horrible when it comes to drawing women. Wonder Woman has always been showcase has had large breasts. It depends on the artist, which is why she has had a changing bust size over the years. From having no cleavage at all, you get the idea. So when they cast Gal Gadot for the role, the first image I saw of her myself she looked like she was totally flat chested and she looked a body wise.
I was worried she was too small body size to play the role. She was also to me an unknown actress but like any character. I was just gonna wait and see what they do. I’ll be honest, her first run as Wonder Woman, I hated the hair they gave her. The way they did her hair this time was way more true to the comics and well, all I can say is hot damn. I was staring at those locks.
Following the Comics
I get it, it’s very hard to showcase years, really decades of comic history into a two-hour film. Heck, even some of the best films Marvel has done (The Winter Solider) came from many years of comic history, cut here and here to make a tight story. Even Civil War which spawns nearly a year of comics across the board cut out a lot of moments I am sure many wishes could have been done.
This is a fact of filmmaking when you take something from one format (comics, books) to film. Some films lose that when they try to adapt it. Wonder Woman follows her origins story rather well.
I have a deep feeling this was DC’s plan the whole time. While reverse storytelling can work, I feel that the moments in the films so far have been lackluster because we don’t know these characters.
DC Needs Gal Gadot
Just knowing Wonder Woman from the comics is not the same as knowing the actress Gal Gadot take on her. Just stop and think, if they had done this reverse storytelling method like Wonder Woman, to the other films DC might be kicking some but right now. Because of this, the way this was done I’m going to expect this is just how the other solo films are gonna be done for the characters we have already seen such as The Flash, etc.
I’m okay with this. I feel once we get past that odd stage of knowing the core cast of heroes DC will rival Marvel in story telling.
Telling a Good Story
Wonder Woman follows the story of Diana, Princess of Themyscira, Daughter of Hippolyta; has she discovers what she is and the world she never knew. It’s almost a coming of age story as Diana is locked away on Themyscira her whole life. Until a young adult when by chance she is sucked into Man’s World.
Now the comic way of telling this story and the film are different and while I wish we had gotten more time on Themyscira because all the actress they cast to play her Amazonian sisters are all stunning and the action was amazing.
As I said before the story is very direct, we get very little in terms of side-plots, there are no easter eggs or set ups for future films. I fully expect it to make more than Batman v Superman alone.
Even know those are more known than she is (it’s a toss up depending on who you ask) the film is better. As of June 4th, it’s made well over $103K Domestically. This is a win all around as it’s the first female lead film to be number one, to break that number and also being directed by a female Director. You go Wonder Woman!
The Music is Awesome
We only got the OST theme of Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman, not too much of it. So it was hard to really judge how the music of this film was. For the most part, the music was what I expected out of a comic book film. Rather basic I’m gonna be honest, that was until we reached the 3rd act of the film. This is when things started to get going.
As I think back, I’m shocked that most of the film has very little action. But it’s all done in a way that I didn’t even notice we had reached the 3rd act of the movie. The theme song, the battle music is so awesome. It gives me that Spider-Man chill of the original trilogy music with a twist of the Amazing Spider-man music to it. I hope that we get more Wonder Woman solo films, to be honest with you.
What can I say about Wonder Woman? Go see it. I think it’s worth at least one show. I myself went to see the 3D XD version of the film which has become a store of standard for me when I watch films now. At least always in XD format. The 3D in this film was well lacking.
I didn’t see as many moments of 3D other than when it came to well big set shots which make me wonder a bit. Other films are done with better 3D even films that it was an afterthought on. I’m not gonna hold that against them.
When I looked back at my reaction video I made way back in July 2016, even I said the same thing about her hair and I did like how my thoughts are pretty much the same. Generally, they do change given it was just the Comic-Con Trailer. The jokes in the movie were all nailed.
Again many of them spoiled in the trailers. But one that I will add shocked me and I loved, was the ice cream scene. Anyone who knows anything about Wonder Woman knows what I’m talking about here.
