Toxic Avenger (2025) Review

I don’t really know where to begin with this one. I remember hearing about the project a couple of years ago and thinking, “That’s a strange kind of franchise to bring back in 2025.” The original Toxic Avenger films were vulgar, full of innuendo, soft-core scenes, and plenty of gore. Honestly, I didn’t think a film like this could even exist in today’s climate. People are quick to label things offensive, and horror has shifted toward either overly serious tones or torture gore. But the original Toxic Avenger worked because it was ridiculous and over the top, not because it was believable.

The Original Spirit

Back in the day, the movies were about 1 percent raunch and 99 percent cartoonish gore. Arms ripped off, faces smashed, blood fountains, and explosions everywhere. It was 80s horror excess at its best. You could never take it seriously. Toxic Avenger 2025 carries some of that same energy, which honestly surprised me. And then there is Peter Dinklage. His casting shocked me at first. He is not an actor I usually connect with projects like this, but he did a decent job.

A Reimagined Origin

This version is not a reboot or sequel but more of a reimagining. It still exists in the same universe as the originals, but with a new character at the center. Instead of a bullied geek who falls into toxic waste, this Toxie is a man with a tragic backstory. A wife who died of cancer and a son who gives him motivation. They added more depth, shifting away from the old girlfriend subplot.

Cartoon Throwbacks

One thing I appreciated was the Easter eggs from the Toxic Crusader cartoon. If you do not know, back in the late 80s and early 90s, Hollywood had this habit of turning R-rated films into Saturday morning cartoons. Rambo, Robocop, Terminator, and, yes, Toxic Avenger all had cartoons and toy lines. Seeing nods to that era gave the movie a certain charm.

Pacing and Problems

The movie runs around two hours, but it takes nearly an hour before he even becomes Toxic. That is typical of an origin film, but it made the first half feel a bit slow and forgettable. The villain was ridiculous, but that fits the tone, so no points lost there. My biggest issue was the voice dubbing. Dinklage only played his human form, then voiced Toxie while a separate suit actor handled the costume work. The mismatch between the suit actor’s physical performance and the dubbed voice was jarring, especially during the final monologue. It reminded me of bad Godzilla dubs or even the awkward voice work in Madame Web.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Toxic Avenger 2025 is fine but forgettable. I would give it a 5 out of 10. It is not terrible, but it is not groundbreaking either. It keeps the spirit of the original, adds a few modern touches, and throws in some nostalgic nods. But I do not see it turning into a big franchise. This feels more like a passion project that finally got a wide release after years of delays. So what did you think? Did you see the new Toxic Avenger? Were you even aware of the four original films and the short-lived cartoon series? Let me know in the comments. I would love to hear your thoughts.
