Dragon Ball Super Returns? Rewriting Battle of Gods and the Future of Canon

By

Majin Planet

Last month we finally got the announcement trailer confirming that Dragon Ball Super is returning. I didn’t post a reaction right away, and that was intentional.

At the time, I was rebuilding MajinPlanet into what it is now — faster, cleaner, and built for the long haul. After running this site for 25 years and being part of this fandom for over three decades, I’ve learned something important: timing matters.

Now that things have settled, let’s talk about what’s actually being announced, what it likely means for the franchise, and what you can expect here on MajinPlanet.

Is Dragon Ball Super Being Remade?

From everything currently available, it appears that Dragon Ball Super is being revisited — starting with a new adaptation of the Battle of Gods arc.

Originally, Battle of Gods was adapted into 14 episodes when Super first aired. The new version is rumored to be much shorter, possibly around six episodes, and closer to Akira Toriyama’s original intent.

If that holds true, this isn’t just a remake. It’s potentially a correction.

And that matters.

Why Would They Redo Battle of Gods?

There are a few reasons this makes sense.

First, this is a major anniversary year for Dragon Ball. The franchise began in 1984. When you step back and realize how long this series has been running, it’s staggering. Few properties in entertainment have had this kind of longevity.

Second, there have long been discussions about giving Dragon Ball Super something similar to a “Kai treatment” — tighter pacing, refined animation, and stronger alignment with the creator’s vision.

This new iteration could be the beginning of that.

Dragon Ball Canon Has Always Been Complicated

Let’s be honest — Dragon Ball canon has never been clean.

You have:

• The original Dragon Ball manga written by Akira Toriyama
• The anime adaptation
• The Dragon Ball Super manga
• The Dragon Ball Super anime
• The theatrical films
• Now Dragon Ball Daima

The Super anime and manga famously diverged in key areas. Goku vs. Hit is one example. In the manga, Goku uses Super Saiyan God strategically. In the anime, we get Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken.

Both came from Toriyama’s notes — but they were interpreted differently by Toei and Toyotarou.

That’s where things get messy.

Where Does Dragon Ball Daima Fit?

Dragon Ball Daima changes the equation.

It takes place after Dragon Ball Z but before Dragon Ball Super. It was directly written by Toriyama and does not have a separate manga adaptation. Because of that, many fans consider it part of the core canon rather than an adaptation.

But here’s the issue.

There is no mention of Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball Super.

And yet Daima introduces concepts that strongly suggest the form could re-enter continuity.

My Personal Theory

This is speculation — not confirmation — but I believe the Battle of Gods remake could introduce Super Saiyan 4 before Goku unlocks Super Saiyan God.

It would bridge Daima and Super more cleanly. It would explain why certain forms were explored and abandoned. It would also modernize continuity in a way that smooths out long-standing debates.

Vegeta using Super Saiyan 3 in Daima but not against Beerus is another interesting gap. Either he refined it and abandoned it for efficiency reasons, or the timeline is being recalibrated.

If they’re rebuilding Super from the ground up, now is the time to fix those inconsistencies.

What About the Moro Arc?

The Space Patrol / Moro Arc is officially coming.

This is significant because it’s the first major storyline primarily developed under Toyotarou after Toriyama stepped back. It also gave Vegeta meaningful character growth, including Ultra Ego.

The tone shift between early Super and the later manga arcs is noticeable. If adapted faithfully, this could be the strongest arc Super has ever animated.

The Licensing Issues Appear Resolved

For a while, there were rumors and confusion surrounding rights and internal disputes within the Dragon Ball franchise. After Toriyama’s passing, those concerns intensified.

The fact that we’re getting new animated content strongly suggests those issues have been resolved.

And that’s good news for everyone.

Should Dragon Ball Move Forward Instead of Backward?

Here’s where I get a little traditional.

I love the history of Dragon Ball. But at some point, the franchise has to move forward.

Instead of constantly revisiting the past, I’d like to see:

• Stories set after the End of Z
• Focus on the next generation
• Or even a proper reimagining of Dragon Ball GT

GT had strong ideas. Poor execution doesn’t mean poor potential. There’s a difference.

What This Means for MajinPlanet

Dragon Ball is part of this site’s DNA. MajinPlanet started with AMVs, fan fiction, and classic Dragon Ball content.

So here’s the plan.

When Dragon Ball Super returns:

• Time-based reactions will go up on MajinPlanet the same day I record
• Extended cuts will be available for Super 1 members
• Edited versions will release on a delay
• Eventually, reactions will go public on Majin Planet TV

I’m considering keeping Majin Planet Reacts strictly Tokusatsu (Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Ultraman) while Dragon Ball lives on the main channel.

Everything will always be archived here on MajinPlanet.com.

Final Thoughts

Even if we don’t get a full weekly anime immediately, I’m just excited that Dragon Ball is active again.

Movies like Broly and Super Hero were strong. If we get occasional theatrical releases instead of rushed weekly arcs, I’m fine with that.

The key is quality.

If this Battle of Gods remake truly aligns closer to Toriyama’s original vision, it could set the tone for a stronger, more unified Dragon Ball future.

And when it drops this fall, I’ll be covering it here consistently.

Dragon Ball isn’t just returning.

It’s evolving.

And that’s something worth talking about.

Until next time.
