Gozyuger Doesn’t Combine—And That’s the Point

June 24, 2025

If you've been watching Super Sentai for a while, you know the pattern: multiple mecha join together into a flashy, over-the-top robot. There's a formula, a rhythm to it. You almost expect it by episode 10. But Gozyuger? It's flipping that script.

As of Episode 17, we still haven’t seen a proper combination between all five—or even all six—mecha. Yes, there was that one episode where each member was piloting a copy of the Tega Sword. And once, we saw Red and Blue combine, with only Blue present in the cockpit. But even those moments were less about traditional combining and more about creative coordination. And honestly? I think that’s the point.

A More Focused Mecha Dynamic

What we’re seeing instead is something more streamlined. Each mech has its moment, its battle. Rather than the show rushing into one big super mode, Gozyuger gives us time to see each mecha shine on its own.
  • Red gets solo spotlight fights.
  • Blue has had a combined sequence, but remained the pilot.
  • The Tega Sword remains central, but not dominant.
By choosing not to combine the robots, the show is sending a message: every team member—and every machine—matters on its own.

The Sixth Ranger Could Shift Things—Or Not

With the arrival of the Sixth Ranger, we may see some sort of bigger combo. Maybe a mid-season reveal. Maybe a late-game twist. But even if we don’t, I’m okay with it. Why? Because Gozyuger has already proven that it doesn’t need a towering combination robot to make battles exciting. The choreography, the cinematography, and the pacing have all carried the action just fine. And let's not forget: when they pilot the Tega Sword, they do it unmorphed. That alone is a bold visual and thematic choice, separating this season from almost every other Sentai before it.

Smart Toy Strategy Too

From a marketing perspective, this approach also works. If you want to show all five pilots using Tega Sword-style robots, what does that mean for the toyline? Simple: it encourages you to buy more than one. Maybe even five. That strategy might sound cynical, but it’s effective. And the show doesn’t feel like it’s cutting corners. It feels intentional. Artistic. Like they know they have something different here and are leaning into it.

Sometimes, Less Is More

It’s easy to forget that Sentai used to be more grounded. Not every season had massive multi-part mechs. Gozyuger is tapping into that old-school simplicity while still keeping things fresh and modern. And with the 50th anniversary banner hanging over this season, that throwback energy feels just right. They’re honoring the past by not repeating it exactly. So if we never get the big flashy combination shot, I won’t be disappointed. Because Gozyuger has already proven it doesn’t need to follow the formula to earn its title. Until Next Time.
