Okay I finally got the Language Tools working. It’s javascript base, which I don’t like because first off search engines can’t read it. I did however put it in as a noscript part which I think search bots can read when passing threw it. Not sure however if they can pass threw form drop down menus.
Anyways all my other shots at doing it have failed. I first try with PHP, which I found a free script. However one of the functions require to use it is disable form being used as met on the server. Over paying someone 1,000s of bucks to translate every page of the site and great a gateway like lot of sites do (then pay them again when I update; which is too often) I got broke too fast that is I can’t even pay for it to being with. So that leaves two options left. Lucky for me Google has a nice feature and after messing around with it I was able to make a nice drop down menu.
Now if you see ??? in the menu that means your computer doesn’t support the font (that is you don’t have it installed) Most general users will see ??? (questions marks) in place of the Asian characters because most computers don’t have that font and keyboard set installed. However if you have a XP CD it’s easy to install. For the most part everyone will be able to use it and read it whatever language your speak and read. If you read and speak Japanese, chances are you already have the right stuff installed.
Right now its very buggy, basically when you go to change the language it takes you to the Google Translation site and translates the page. I just remove a few steps for you to get to the translation. Now if you decided to go back to English or another language it will embed another frame inside (If you didn’t click to remove it the first time). It does this because the select has no target. I’ve so far been unable to make it go into a new window, new tab or on top of the master frame. Also because Google writes the url when you do this it doesn’t work because it can’t read the url. This only is effect in the Javascript version.
So right now its about 50% where I want it. I rather have it on site and not go off site but I have not found any good simple tools to do this so far. If you come from a non-speaking English land you at least get to read Majin Planet’s content now quick and easy. I hope to see more non-English speaking people on the site now. I guess the test will come over the next month if this does happen (which is the point, to help use grow as a community and build a stronger fan base). I’ll have more on this as I get down to coding a better version of this.
