Revolutionary Girl Utena is about a tomboy orphan enrolled in Ohtori Academy. Tenjou Utena quickly learns that a faction called End of the World is controlling the Student Council (President Kiryuu Touga, Vice President Kyoichi Saionji, member Arisugawa Juri and member Kaoru Miki) making people fight in duels. A ring that Utena received long ago from a prince is all the separates duelists from normal students. In these duels, the duelists fight for possession of the Rose Bride (Himemiya Anthy) and the Power of Dios to bring forth a revolution to change the world with also the power of eternity and miracles. Utena became involved while she was defending her best friends (Shinohara Wakaba) honor and beat the Vice President in a duel.

Utena is a tomboy with the high ideals of one day becoming a prince so she can save princess. This idea came to Utena long ago when her parents died and a handsome prince came and rescued her. He gave her the Rose Signet that led her to Ohtori Academy. There she became involved in duels with the Student Council for the Rose Bride. After winning the Rose Bride she became assigned to live with Utena and they became close friends. Utena is good at everything boys are and is darn proud of it. She has high morals and looks down on dishonorable behavior. Pure, innocent and headstrong Utena has vowed to protect Anthy from the duelists that challenge her.

Himemiya Anthy

Anthy is the sought after Rose Bride. Underneath this wonderful title is a very quiet and obedient girl who is treated very poorly by everyone except Utena. She is the sister to the Deputy Chairman of Trustees and a witch. During the duels she is supposed to be present to provide the current winner with the blessing of Dios and the magic sword that they are to duel with (which comes from her chest). Anthy is also in charge of the care of the roses on the campus. Chu-Chu (a monkey) is her only other friend besides Utena.

Kiryuu Touga
President of the Student Council

A natural pretty boy who gets every girl he wants, Touga is the king of the campus. He knows the secrets to End of the World plans but still take part in the duels hoping to win and be the one to revolutionize the world. Along the way he tries to seduce Utena into thinking he is her prince so that he could defeat her in his couple duels against her but he ends up being the one to fall in love with her. Even being a mater at kendo, in the end, he couldnt defeat her or even convince her that his feelings were sincere.

Kyoichi Saionji
Vice President of the Student Council
Age: 17
School year: 11th
Blood type: O
Captain of the Kendo Team, Saionji is only concerned about himself and how far he can get himself in life by any means. In his diary he has a fantasy that he and Anthy will be together forever and that he will defeat Utena, which never happens. His aggressive behavior and treatment of the Rose Bride irritates the members of the Student Council and even gets him expelled for a short time.

Arishugawa Juri

Not believing in miracles and having a rough past, Juri is a distant and levelheaded woman. She became Captain of the Fencing Team because the last captain suffered an illness. She only duels to see if the power of miracles is real and if so she wanted it to set right her past. Throughout the show it is made apparent that she loves a girl name Shiori who has made her life difficult on purpose. In the third season, Juri is finally able to let go of Shiori and attains a crush on Utena.

Kaoru Miki
Member of the Student Council

A super genius, Miki is the youngest person ever on the Student Council. He takes college level courses, is Assistant Captain of the Fencing Team, plays the piano and writes his own music. His family life isnt perfect (but what a kid now as days is?) and he takes care of his younger twin sister (Kozue), who causes a lot of trouble, while they are at school. He fights in the duels because he thinks he loves the Rose Bride and thinks she deserves a better life.

Kiryuu Nanami

Nanami only cares about two people, herself and her big brother Touga. She is a very jealous queen bee and proves so by drowning a little kitten that she gave to her brother when he started to pay more attention to it then her. In some ways her actions of jealousy and clamoring for attention from her brother has been taken for incest but thats not true. She is just afraid of losing her sibling bond. When her brother was hospitalize from the act from Saionji (thats why he was expelled) Nanami took his place as President of the Student Council. Nanami absolutely hate Utena for the attention she gets from her brother and at her cheerful disposition.

The Prince
He is depicted in a shadow form threw most of the show to conceal his identity (though u can guess who he is). Utena has been in search of him ever since she was a child and once she join the Ohtori Academy she has thought him to be two people, Touga and Akio.

Ohtori Akio

The man behind it all, End of the World, Akio san. Anthys brother and Utenas once upon a time prince. Growing up in the real world and never getting his power to revolutionize the world, Akio has lost his princely ness and grown power hungry. He is no better then Touga, even though engaged to the Chairman of the Boards daughter (Ohtori Kanae), he goes around with every girl in the school. Utena even falls for him because he so reminds her of her prince (duh?). But in the end, when the power to revolutionize the world was rightfully earned by Utena, Akio has Anthy stab Utena to get her out of the way so Akio can try and receive the power.

Souji Mikage
Leader of the Black Rose Society

Mikage (if thats who he really is) is a genius that the school has great faith in. His works with End of the World of gain eternity and the secret motive to kill Anthy. He uses other people to fight his duels against Utena for him. To get these people to do what he wishes, he takes them into his seminar and prods them till they tell their deepest darkest desires. He brainwashes them telling them that if they kill the Rose Bride they will attain what they desire. Mikage desires the Rose Brides death and the power of eternity so that he can save Mamiya

Chida Mamiya

A very ill boy that Mikage grew fond of. This boy tends to the Black Roses that Mikage uses to control his chosen duelists. This boy wishes for the death of the Rose Bride so he can take her place and live forever. (The real Mamiysa is really dead, this one was created by Akio so he could keep using Mikages brain.)

Shinohara Wakaba

Wakaba is the normal best friends of Utena but she has a weird habit of calling Utena her boyfriend or true love and jumping on her. Wakaba has a crush on Saionji though and her love letter to him started Utena down the trail of revolution. Wakaba also became a pawn of the Black Rose and challenged Utena to a duel but failed and does remember a thing. Even though Utena was her best friend, she forgets her at the end of the series along with everyone else.

Revolutionary Girl Utena Story
Intro:
Once upon a time, years and years ago there was a little princess, and she was very sad for her mother and father had died. Before the princess there appeared a traveling prince riding upon a white horse. He had a regal bearing and a kind smile. The prince wrapped the princess in a rose scented embrace and gentle wiped the tears from her eyes. Little one, he said, who bears up alone in such deep sorrow. Never lose that strength and nobility, even when you grow up. I give you this [ring] to remember this day. We will meet again. This ring will lead you to me one day. Perhaps the ring the prince gave her was an engagement ring. This was all well and good, but so impressed she was by him that the princess vowed to become a prince herself one day. But was that really such a good idea?

Story Synopsis:

New opponents from End of the World (Deputy Chairman of Trustees Ohtori Akio, Anthys brother) rise called the Black Rose Society (Souji Mikage and Chida Mamiya) and their objective is to kill the Rose Bride. They send other people (normal classmates) infected by the Black Rose to fight Utena but they all lose to her. In a last ditch effort they try to turn Utena to their side but she figures them out and Mikage challenges her to a duel and loses ending the Black Rose Society.

Utena could careless about the power, all she wants is to find her prince, the man she loves but every step of the way End of the World pulled his strings to manipulate her. After many battles, Utena was the winner and entered the castle to find who she thought was her prince. Inside was another trick of End of the World and Utena was literally backstabbed by the Rose Bride who had become a very close friend. Akio tells Utena he was her prince but that she couldn t open the doors to the revolution because she was a girl. Anthy gives Akio the magic sword and she sacrifices herself to protect her brother while he tries to bring forth the Revolution, but he fails. With her last bit of strength, Utena gets up to save Anthy from her stupid fate by opening the doors. She opens them to find a coffin with Anthy inside. Before she could save her, the coffin falls away and flying swords attack Utena who has collapsed on the floor. The next day everyone but Anthy and Akio has forgotten about Utena. Akio plans for the next attempt to bring forth the revolution but Anthy refuses to participate and leave him to find Utena, wherever she had gone to
