What Happens to Optimus Prime Without Peter Cullen?

After watching Optimus Prime: Awakening, I’ve been thinking a lot about something Transformers fans are eventually going to have to deal with.

What happens to Optimus Prime now?

Peter Cullen played this character for more than 40 years. Obviously, he wasn’t the only actor who ever voiced Optimus Prime. Transformers has had different continuities, different cartoons, different games, and different interpretations of the character.

But when people think of the voice of Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen is the standard.

That’s going to make whatever happens next incredibly difficult.

I made a post on Threads about this and basically said Hasbro has a few obvious choices. The responses reminded me of something that really shouldn’t have surprised me.

No matter which direction Hasbro goes, somebody is going to hate it.

Option One: Recast Optimus Prime

This is probably the most straightforward answer.

Optimus Prime continues to exist, and another actor takes over the role.

We’ve already had other people voice Optimus Prime in different Transformers continuities, so the idea itself isn’t something new.

I also don’t think the next actor necessarily has to perform a perfect Peter Cullen impression.

There is a certain quality I expect from Optimus Prime. He needs that commanding presence. He needs to sound like a leader. He needs to have that warmth underneath the strength.

But that doesn’t mean somebody has to spend the rest of their career trying to perfectly imitate Peter Cullen.

We’ve had versions of Prime that sounded different and still felt like Optimus Prime to me.

The Netflix War for Cybertron version is one example. The performance was different, and the delivery could be extremely slow at times, but I could still accept that voice as an earlier version of Optimus.

That’s the important part for me.

Does it still feel like the character?

There will absolutely be people who reject anybody who isn’t Peter Cullen. I understand why. Cullen’s voice has been connected to Prime for most of the franchise’s existence.

But if Transformers is going to continue for another 40 years, eventually other actors are going to have to carry these characters forward.

That doesn’t erase Peter Cullen.

It means the character continues.

Option Two: Retire Optimus Prime

This is the option I think makes the least sense.

I understand the emotional argument.

Peter Cullen is gone, so perhaps his Optimus Prime should go with him.

As a tribute to the actor, I can understand why somebody would feel that way.

But Optimus Prime is bigger than any single Transformers show or movie at this point.

He is the face of Transformers.

He’s the character you put on the box when you want somebody to immediately recognize the brand.

He’s Transformers’ Pikachu. He’s its Goku. He’s its Batman. He’s its Spider-Man.

You don’t permanently retire Batman because one Batman actor is gone.

You don’t stop making Spider-Man because an actor associated with the character can no longer play him.

Optimus Prime has reached that same level within Transformers.

Hasbro already tried moving beyond Optimus Prime once in the original animated continuity when Rodimus Prime took over.

We all know how permanent that turned out to be.

I simply don’t see Hasbro deciding that Optimus Prime is finished forever.

Maybe one continuity moves on from him. Maybe another Autobot becomes the leader for a while. Transformers should absolutely be able to tell stories where Optimus isn’t the central character.

But permanently removing him from the franchise?

I don’t see it.

Option Three: Peter Cullen’s Voice Continues Through AI

This is where the conversation gets much more complicated.

I’ve heard two completely different stories online.

One says Peter Cullen didn’t want his voice recreated after his death.

The other says he had an agreement with Hasbro allowing his voice to continue being used as Optimus Prime, including through AI.

I couldn’t find reliable confirmation for either version exactly as people have repeated them.

What we do know, however, makes the situation much more interesting.

Before Cullen’s death, Hasbro launched an AI-focused studio called Sixth Wall and announced a partnership with ElevenLabs involving officially licensed voices for Hasbro characters.

Optimus Prime was specifically one of those characters.

ElevenLabs also identified Peter Cullen as the voice behind that version of Optimus Prime and explained that its Hasbro voices were being developed from authorized material, including new studio recordings and archival performances.

That’s very different from somebody taking old Transformers episodes, cloning Cullen’s voice without permission, and making Optimus Prime say whatever they want.

There appears to have already been an authorized project involving Cullen, Hasbro, and AI voice technology while Cullen was still alive.

What we don’t know publicly, at least from anything I’ve been able to verify, is exactly how far those rights extend after his death.

That’s the part that matters.

Did Cullen authorize only a specific interactive Optimus Prime project?

Did the agreement allow Hasbro to use an approved voice model for future projects?

Are there restrictions on what kinds of media it can appear in?

Does his estate have approval?

I don’t know.

And until those details are actually made public, I’m not going to pretend that I do.

Using AI Isn’t the Same Question as Using It Without Permission

I think this is where conversations about AI immediately fall apart online.

Someone hears “AI Peter Cullen” and the argument instantly becomes either AI is evil or AI is amazing.

I don’t think that’s the useful question here.

The question should be whether Peter Cullen actually authorized his performance to be used this way and what he agreed to.

If an actor says, “I want this character to continue using my voice after I’m gone,” and enters into an agreement that allows that, I see that completely differently than a company cloning someone’s voice after their death without their permission.

Those are not the same situation.

James Earl Jones and Darth Vader immediately come to mind because we’ve already had this conversation with another iconic voice attached to another iconic character.

Technology has reached a point where a performance doesn’t necessarily have to end when the performer can no longer record new dialogue.

That creates opportunities, but it also creates a massive responsibility.

If Hasbro does have permission to continue Cullen’s Optimus Prime voice, I don’t think that automatically makes using it right or wrong.

It depends on how they use it.

There’s a huge difference between preserving a voice for a limited project and deciding Peter Cullen’s digital voice should perform every Optimus Prime line for the next 50 years.

Even if something is legally allowed, fans are still going to have opinions about whether it feels appropriate.

There Is No Choice That Makes Everyone Happy

This was really the point of my original Threads post.

I wasn’t saying Hasbro should use AI.

I wasn’t saying Hasbro should recast Optimus.

And I wasn’t saying they should retire him.

I was saying these are the obvious directions sitting in front of them, and every one of them is going to upset part of the fandom.

Recast him and people will say the new actor isn’t Peter Cullen.

Retire him and people will ask why Hasbro is removing the most recognizable character in Transformers.

Use an authorized AI version of Cullen’s voice and people will argue about whether a deceased actor’s performance should continue through technology.

That’s the problem.

There’s no magic fourth option where every Transformers fan nods their head and says, “Yep, that’s perfect.”

This is a fandom that has spent decades arguing about things far smaller than this.

We’re definitely going to argue about the future voice of Optimus Prime.

I Don’t Want Another Actor Trapped Doing a Peter Cullen Impression

If Hasbro does eventually recast the role for its major Transformers productions, there is one thing I hope they don’t do.

Don’t hire somebody whose entire job is to pretend to be Peter Cullen.

Peter Cullen already gave us Peter Cullen’s Optimus Prime.

Nobody is going to replace that.

Let the next person find their version of Optimus while keeping the things that make Prime who he is.

Keep the leadership.

Keep the compassion.

Keep that sense that when Optimus Prime speaks, everyone else stops and listens.

That’s more important to me than whether every syllable sounds exactly like the voice I heard in 1984.

If the performance is good and the character feels like Optimus Prime, I can accept another voice.

We’ve done it before.

We’ll probably have to do it again.

Final Thoughts

I don’t envy whoever ultimately has to make this decision.

Peter Cullen didn’t simply voice Optimus Prime.

He helped define what Optimus Prime was.

That’s why this conversation is different from a normal recasting.

For millions of people, those two voices, the character and the actor, became almost inseparable.

But Transformers has to continue.

Optimus Prime will probably continue with it.

Maybe that means another actor takes over.

Maybe different Transformers continuities handle him differently.

Maybe authorized Peter Cullen recordings or voice technology are used in certain situations.

Maybe it’s eventually some combination of all of those things.

I don’t know what Hasbro is going to choose.

I just know somebody is going to be mad about it.

And I don’t think insulting people because they prefer one option over another gets us anywhere.

You can think recasting Prime is the right answer without somebody else being an idiot for wanting Cullen’s authorized voice preserved.

You can dislike AI without pretending an authorized performance and an unauthorized voice clone are exactly the same thing.

You can want Peter Cullen’s version to end while still accepting that Optimus Prime as a character isn’t going anywhere.

We’re talking about the future of a character people have loved for more than 40 years.

We’re going to disagree.

That’s okay.

Whatever happens next, Peter Cullen’s Optimus Prime isn’t going to disappear.

Those shows, movies, games, performances, and memories are already there.

Nobody who voices Optimus Prime next can take that away.
